The Knurled Project is a London-based lighting brand with a small but perfectly formed team. Meet the humans that make the magic happen.
Best Men become Business Partners
The brains behind the business are two best friends, Tom and Paul. After meeting as teenagers the duo stumbled through their school years together to the soundtrack of the 90s and the rest, as they say, is history. Many shared life milestones later, including a move to London, far-flung travel adventures and the very greatest responsibility of best man duties, Tom and Paul decided to pool their passions and knowledge into a business venture. But where would they start?
It was late 2020 when a spark of ingenuity collided with the flame of good timing, and The Knurled Project exploded into being. Paul, a finance whizz who had spent over a decade working for some of London’s top finance firms, was back in his home town of Solihull after leaving the capital to start up his own successful construction company. Personal and professional worlds merged after a chance conversation with best friend Tom rapidly snowballed into a fully-fledged business plan. The work that followed happened at lightning speed, and a seed of an idea gave way to something much bigger.
Soon, they had sourced suppliers, landed on a brand name, and pressed the big green button on their website. It wasn’t long before the first customer had placed their order, and the co-founders sent their inaugural package of light out into the world.
And so, The Knurled Project was born.

Let’s get the big question out of the way first. Unsure what knurled actually means? You’re certainly not alone, and we’re going to save you the search. Knurling refers to the process by which a textured pattern of straight, angled or crossed lines is rolled into a piece of metal. It creates that effortlessly elegant diamond-cut pattern you’ll see across our range, and lends a sophisticated, timeless appearance to your light installations.
Light and Shade
It’s a universal truth that a great bulb is only as good as its shade, which is why at the Knurled Project we use the very best glass designs across our collection. Cylinder, diamond, sphere or pendant, whatever your preference you can mix and match with your metal of choice to ensure your light is the perfect fit for your home.

What do you get when you take heavy metal and make it light? Nope, this isn’t the start of a terrible dad joke. This is what we do at The Knurled Project.
